The
American Heart Association offers multiple cerification courses
on Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
Often times a CPR certification is required for jobs in which patient
contact is likely. This option is a quick way to obtain a certification.
Class length varies from 6 to 8 hours. Contact
the Welcome Back Center for more detailed information on how to
obtain your CPR certificaiton. For more detailed information on

BLS
for Healthcare Providers:
The
American Heart Association's Course Description:
The BLS Healthcare Provider Course teaches CPR skills for helping
victims of all ages (including doing ventilation with a barrier
device, a bag-mask device, and oxygen); use of an automated external
defibrillator (AED); and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction
(FBAO). It's intended for participants who provide heath care to
patients in a wide variety of settings, including in-hospital and
out-of-hospital. For certified or noncertified, licensed or nonlicensed
healthcare professionals.
Course Length: 6-8 hours
Intended
Audience:
Healthcare providers, such as physicians, nurses, paramedics, emergency
medical technicians, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational
therapists, physician's assistants, residents or fellows, or medical
or nursing students in training, aides, medical or nursing assistants,
police officers, and other allied health personnel.

ACLS
for Healthcare Providers:
The
American Heart Association's Course Description:
The ACLS Provider Course provides the knowledge and skills needed
to evaluate and manage the first 10 minutes of an adult ventricular
fibrillation/ventricular tachycardia (VF/VT) arrest. Providers are
expected to learn to manage 10 core ACLS cases: a respiratory emergency,
four types of cardiac arrest (simple VF/VT, complex VF/VT, PEA and
asystole), four types of prearrest emergencies (bradychardia, stable
tachycardia, unstable tachycardia and acute coronary syndromes)
and stroke.
Course Length: 8-16 hours
Intended
Audience:
Personnel staffing emergency, intensive care or critical care departments;
emergency medical providers such as physicians, nurses, emergency
technicians, paramedics, respiratory therapists and other professionals
who may respond to a cardiovascular emergency.
